So I was wracking my brain trying to think of some kind of Halloween article to write up.  I’ve got stuff stored away for one idea, but figured I’d go with this new one: Co-Op Costume Ideas!  Dressing up as your favorite video game character is fun, but the real joy is conning convincing the rest of your friends to join in with you!

Of course, there’s dozens of characters to choose from when it comes to video game characters, so here’s a small sampling of those you could choose from.  Also, these suggestions are of characters that only work together in video games (so work together for good sweet loot and photo ops!).

Legend Of Zelda: Four Swords

This is an obvious costume idea that’s been done before, but it’s simple considering (for the most part), you’re all pretty much wearing the same thing.

Pros: Walking around as one of the more adored VG boys, various weapons at your disposal

Cons: Being comfortable enough in your masculinity to wear white tights

Bonus Points: Getting girlfriends to dress up as Zelda

Katamari Damacy Characters

Katamari Damacy is such a zany and unique world.  Looking at all the cousins means there’s a different costume for you and your friends to wear.

Pros: Most cousins have simple enough costumes (its been done before and a few people have gotten it to look quite awesome – [1] [2] [3])

Cons: Some cousins look indecent – Again with the tights issue – Fitting through doorways

Bonus Points: Your buds can help roll the giant Katamari you’ve managed to cobble together from the trash in your room (which now looks clean after having created the Katamari)

Castle Crashers

Medieval fun at its simplest, you and your group could probably cardboard carve these costumes for a quick getup.  Tape a bag to the front of the shield for easy carrying!

Pros: Having weapons to beat candy grabbers away from your shield stash

Cons: Looking like a walking chess set for those uninformed people that pass you by

Bonus Points: Again, gamers with girlfriends get the chance to dress up as the princesses (optional: tieing princesses up to poles for added rescue effect)

Secret of Mana

Ah, RPGs… the one video game genre that makes it easy pickings for group costume parties.

Pros: There’s only three characters to deal with – Costumes are pretty simple, design-wise, Hero’s might be the only complicated one, but Sprite is practically just a green tunic

Cons: The girl is stuck wearing pink MC Hammer pants, Hero is decorated in Pink accents

Bonus Points: Getting the windswept hair of the Hero and the puffy stuff hair of the Sprite to look right – The girl gets a whip to play with

Dragon Force

One of my favorite games to look back on also had a varied set of characters.  If you don’t want to dress up as the different leaders, you could get away with one guy dressing up as one of the leads and the rest being the various commanders and generals in the kingdom.

Pros: There’s a lot of characters to choose from, and they’ve all got different styles

Cons: Junon’s armor would be a tough outfit to look right, let alone everyone else’s (definitely not the easiest to dress up as or get to look right)

Bonus Points: Finding a way to make Teiris’ cape float – Having a room filled with supporting soldiers/harpies/monks/etc

Vendetta

Old school ragtag beat’m-up characters that no one would probably guess in a million years.

Pros: Jeans and multi-colored shirts, what could be easier?

Cons: Not being recognized in costume – Being mistaken for Hulk Hogan instead of Hawk

Bonus Points: Having someone actually getting the game reference

Resident Evil: Outbreak

No doubt there’ll be more than a few zombies out there this Halloween, at least this group has a chance of escaping with the pixie stick goods.

Pros: Costumes are almost everyday wear outfits, so it won’t be hard to go to a local salvation army shop to pick up the pieces

Cons: Sure, it may not even look like you’re dressed up standing alone, but together, someone’s bound to recognize you (eagle eyes will at least have to zone in at the R.P.D. outfit)

Bonus Points: Zombified versions of the group that didn’t quite make it out alive…

Left 4 Dead

Another zombie fighting ragtag bunch, though this time, it’s restricted to four pals (or four pals and their zombie buddies).

Pros: Everyday wear wins out once again, shouldn’t be too hard to fine biker vests and leather jackets

Cons: Not being recognized as being in costume – Getting stopped by the police for seemingly carrying firearms

Bonus Points: Getting your biker ‘Uncle Bob’ and gramps to agree to joining you in this getup for halloween

Sunset Riders

Combining cowboys and video games, what could be a better matchup?

Pros: They’re pretty much just really colorful cowboy outfits

Cons: Being man enough for blue frills – Being twice as manly for being Cormando in a pink poncho and a hot pink sombrero

Bonus Points: Having the horses to go along with the costume – Finding someone to agree to being Cormando

The Lost Vikings

More combination costumes at its finest.  You’re either vikings, or the Lost Vikings, a win-win situation!

Pros: Don’t exactly need to be fit to look the part, and maybe the hardest thing you might have to find is just the different viking helmets

Cons: Finding those fuzzy boots and not getting caught in the rain with them

Bonus Points: Having those sweet ’staches and beards in real life

Herc’s Adventures

Taking it Greek/Roman myth style with these three game heroes.  Definitely another obscure group that no one will get, but at least you can cover it up since they’re part of myth and lore anyways.

Pros: The bare minimum for Herc, not that hard for Atlanta or Jason either.  They’re simple, colorful outfits with no adornments.

Cons: I can’t tell if Jason has anything underneath that skirt…

Bonus Points: Being Herc’s build – The PETA aggravation-induced cape Herc wears

Metal Slug Series

Military fatigues, boots, leather vests, it’s a pretty easy ensemble and a fun group for both guys and gals to jump into.

Pros: The local military shop will have pretty much everything you need

Cons: Another undercover getup, if any of the group leaves your side, you’re just another military garbed trick-or-treater

Bonus Points: Building a tank to drag around (hide candy in) – Getting a fifth to play the Prisoner of War – Zombie versions (because being a zombie version makes everything cooler)

Gauntlet Legends

From: GauntletZeus

It’s a pretty varied cast, what with an elven archer, an egyptian looking wizard, the Valkyrie, and Fabio the warrior.

Pros: They’re so colorful, you won’t lose each other at night

Cons: The warrior’s gonna get mighty cold

Bonus Points: Having the Valkyrie yell out “Sustenance!” every time you get candy

Guardian Heroes

From: lije

Guardian Heroes, another big favorite of mine, is another game with an assortment of characters to choose from.

Pros: Not too much detail in the outfits, no special etchings or decorations on practically any of their costumes (except for smiley face button, but that’s pretty simple)

Cons: Having to lug around a big sword for Han or some of the knights

Bonus Points: Getting a group to play the badguys (especially Zur) – Being the most awesome golden undead knight in existance – Getting someone’s pet hamster to follow whoever’s dressing up as Randy

BONUS

This one’s an easy make for those who really want to dress up as a video game character, but don’t know what to wear.  Just create-a-character (a simple one) and dress like it.

Pros: All it takes is carrying around the plastic instruments with you wherever you go

Cons: Having to be the guy carrying the drums…

Bonus Points: Facing off against people dressed up as Guitar Hero characters, winner takes treats!

SUPER BONUS

If you can find 101 people to play every star character from any of the Suikoden series, you sir/ma’am are a god/goddess in my book.
