MySims Glitchdom
Alright, I know I’ve been absent lately, and really, I’ve no real excuse apart from laziness and a great stash of Christmas prezzies that have been keeping me busy away from the computer (not to mention a lousy cold I caught over the holiday season). But here I am to rant my sorry tale about a present that should be bringing me tons of kiddie-fied joy, yet sadly, isn’t able to do so.
So anyhoo, my wonderful Yeti got me two Wii games this Christmas. One being Animal Crossing, the other MySims Kingdom. Both I should be enjoying quite happily, but am not (at least not MySims). It’s not that MySims isn’t a fun game, far be it from the truth. They’re the kind of casual fare I can pop in and just giggle at with its cutesy-ness and adorable sacchrine coated style. Yet I can’t dive into it’s cutesy-wootsy because the copy I happened to get has some random glitch that only my copy seems to have.
Well, you know a feature of the Wii is to have waggle in at least 10% of the game. In MySims, waggles come in at 80% of the game, and one of those waggle-tastic features deals with the trees. In the original MySims game, you shook trees by clinging onto them and then shaking them with the Wiimote to have it drop whatever goodies it had in its branches for your Sim to use. In Kingdom, it’s the same deal. You waggle shake a tree, you get stuff to use.
The glitch?
Well, waggle as much as I might, my game refuses to shake that tree, or even acknowledge that I’m holding it after a second of waggle. When I press the trigger to clutch the tree, the cursor, shaped like a hand, appropriately takes hold of the tree. But after a second of giving the Wiimote a shake, onscree, the tree will pause for a second and revert to its original position, as if I’m (the cursor) not holding it. The cursor itself still says I’m gripped to the tree, but the tree won’t respond. The same goes for when I try to chop a tree, there’s no response from the Wiimote.
Now, before you go chopping it up to bad batteries or that sort of ilk, I’ll happen to mention that every other Wiimote feature in the game so far has worked. Fishing using the Wiimote is responsive, as is grabbing weeds and doing a quick tug up to get an item. Mining, which uses the Wiimote is also working. It’s just those blasted trees that aren’t working. The Wiimote has a fresh load of batteries, and as far as I’ve checked, the disc is scratchless. Starting a new game does not yield a favorable response from those blasted trees either. For some ungodly reason, my game somehow has a glitch that makes that one waggle feature non-existant, which is a problem when components to build stuff ingame are gotten from a tree I can’t shake down.
I’ve tried writing to EA’s customer support, but apart from telling me to search their boards and pointing me to threads that have nothing to do with my problem (they pointed me to a PC thread for MySims when I’ve clearly stated it’s a problem with a Wii feature), they haven’t answered my question of whether or not it’s a glitch that can be fixable with a simple patch (since practically every game nowadays is patchable).
The real consternation to all this is I can’t just go out to the store and get it swapped for a working disc. Me and the hubby are situated in the UK with a US Wii, and imports are not exactly cheap with VAT. Not to mention that I’m not sure if Play-Asia’s policy is willing to chalk it up to a bad disc and do a complimentary switcheroo for me (I’ve written an email to them and have also yet to get contacted back with a reply).
It’s quite frustrating, seeing as I want to enjoy this game, but a key feature to it is locked out to me for reasons unknown. Can I still play? Yeah, I’d have to chop down the tree and replant it in order to get the tree’s goods, but it’s just not the same, you know? It’s like getting a doll with an arm missing. You can still play with the doll, but it isn’t exactly the whole toy you paid for (in my case, my husband paid for), is it?
