Someone In Marketing Needs To Be Fired…
Filed under GamesSo I came across the box art for a 505 Game that was recently released. 505 Games are one of the developers of ‘girly’ DS games that I give credit to for at least giving their lineups more than just pretty pictures and fractured gameplay. But someone in marketing clearly thinks that the horrendous Ubisoft box art for their US releases are somehow worth imitating in order to generate sales, and I totally disagree with that tactic.
Usually, Ubisoft DS games use real cheesy models to create their box art instead of using the less atrocious and more appealing character art that the game uses in its graphics. Do these box arts stand out? Oh sure, but does it necessarily portray quality gaming? Oh hell no. These are the box arts that people love to spoof and cringe away from because it typically associates to either a game meant for the under 10 set, or for just bad mini-games crammed into an even worse game.

C’mon, this is practically oozing cheese and cornball. You’ve got these poor twenty-plus-in-age looking models that fell from a Halloween edition clothing catalogue trying their best to smile while slowly dying on the inside. And do these look like Divas to you? Seriously, if I find a little girl that wants to be a Diva and not a Princess, I’ll have to shed a tear for childhood innocence.

This, on the other hand, is the UK version of the same game, done by the same company. Look, no cheesy models, just decent art of the characters you play as in the game. There’s enough girlishness, color, and glitter to stand out on its own.

Why spoil a good thing? 505 Games, you had the box art down here in the UK. It had recognizable girls that were consistent, were bold enough in color and style, and had the kind of cartoony-ness that could appeal to a little girl and not scare away parents. Why try to copy Ubisoft’s Imagine line when they tend to be the butt of gamer’s jokes? Here’s hoping they distance themselves from trying to be the next in line for an Imagine spoofing.
